GROUP D!
Preview by Kestas.
Group D: Spain, Russia, Sweden, Greece.
GREECE SQUAD:
Goalkeepers: Antonis Nikopolidis (Olympiakos), Kostas Chalkias (Aris), Alexandros Tzorvas (OFI Crete)
Defenders: Paraskevas Antzas (Olympiakos), Giourkas Seitaridis (Atletico Madrid), Vassilis Torossidis (Olympiakos), Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Eintracht Frankfurt), Christos Patsatzoglou (Olympiakos), Traianos Dellas (AEK), Yiannis Goumas (Panathinaikos), Nikos Spiropoulos (Panathinaikos), Loukas Vyntra (Panathinaikos)
Midfielders: Giorgios Katsouranis (Benfica), Angelos Basinas (Real Mallorca), Giorgos Karagounis (Panathinaikos), Stelios Giannakopoulos (Bolton), Alexandros Tziolis (Panathinaikos)
Forwards: Ioannis Amanatidis (Eintracht Frankfurt), Georgios Samaras (Manchester City), Dimitrios Salpigidis (Panathinaikos), Angelos Charisteas (FC Nuremburg), Theofanis Gekas (Bayer Leverkusen), Nikolaos Liberopoulos (AEK)
The squad has 7 players that played in the last Euro final against Portugal. I could say - Greece is strange team. It has no superstars - I guess only few of you could name known greek players.
Greece had superb result in qualification for euro 2008. This team earned 31 points from 36 possible. Great result, but as you look at it's rivals: Turkey, Norway, Bosnia - not the teams from europe's elite, we have to agree.
I think that this competition for current european champions Greece will end quite soon - it means in this stage.
Friendly matches up to Euro2008:
Greece - Armenia 0 - 0
Hungary - Greece 3 - 2
Greece - Cyprus 2 - 0
Portugal - Greece 1 - 2
Greece - Finland 2 - 1
If you look at friendly games results on the road to euro 2008 against Armenia (0:0) or Hungary (lost 2:3), this team looks not very reliable to bet on, don't you think so? Yes, it's friendly game, preparation game - but results in the last preparation stage with such weak teams should be ONLY wins, for the current champions (it means strongest team in Europe until now).
Prediction: 3 place (this team preparation for Euro2008 showed us, that this team can be a big disappointment of the tournament, so last competitions surprise will not be repeated).
SWEDEN SQUAD:
Goalkeepers: Andreas Isaksson (Manchester City), Rami Shaaban (Hammarby), Johan Wiland (Elfsborg)
Defenders: Olof Mellberg (Juventus), Petter Hansson (Rennes), Fredrik Stoor (Rosenborg), Daniel Majstorovic (Basle), Mikael Dorsin (CFR Cluj), Andreas Granqvist (Helsingborg)
Midfielders: Mikael Nilsson (Panathinaikos), Niclas Alexandersson (IFK Gothenburg), Tobias Linderoth (Galatasaray), Freddie Ljungberg (West Ham), Anders Svensson (Elfsborg), Kim Kallstrom (Lyon), Sebastian Larsson (Birmingham), Daniel Andersson (Malmo), Christian Wilhelmsson (Deportivo de la Coruna)
Forwards: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan), Johan Elmander (Toulouse), Henrik Larsson (Helsingborg), Marcus Allback (FC Copenhagen), Markus Rosenberg (Werder Bremen)
First goalkeeper is Manchester City's Andreas Isaksson have played just four times in the Premier League last season. This can me a big concern for Sweden fans. The player to look after we would call Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan).
The road to euro2008 was not brilliant, Sweden had to be nervous until last round, but succesfully they won in Latvia last round, while N. Ireland lost to Spain - Sweden ended 2nd. But let me remind, they have lost to N. Ireland away and only drew at home - not great, yeah? Well, and remember they have lost 0:3 away in Spain - terrible result so it's impossible to put this team in one level with favorites of the tournament.
Friendly matches in preparation to Euro 2008:
Sweden - Ukraine 0 - 1
Sweden - Brazil 0 - 1
Turkey - Sweden 0 - 0
United States - Sweden 2 - 0
Costa Rica - Sweden 0 - 1
One goal scored in 5 games!!! And the rivals were far far from football elite teams...
Prediction: 4 place (looking at the results and ability to score we think this championship will be a big disappointment for Sweden).
RUSSIA SQUAD:
Goalkeepers: Igor Akinfeyev (CSKA Moscow), Vyacheslav Malafeyev (Zenit St Petersburg), Vladimir Gabulov (Amkar Perm)
Defenders: Sergei Ignashevich (CSKA), Vasili Berezutski (CSKA), Aleksei Berezutski (CSKA), Aleksandr Anyukov (Zenit), Denis Kolodin (Dynamo Moscow), Renat Yanbayev (Lokomotiv Moscow), Roman Shirokov (Zenit)
Midfielders: Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (Lokomotiv), Yuri Zhirkov (CSKA), Igor Semshov (Dynamo), Dmitri Torbinsky (Lokomotiv), Vladimir Bystrov (Spartak Moscow), Konstantin Zyryanov (Zenit), Sergei Semak (Rubin Kazan)
Forwards: Andrei Arshavin (Zenit), Pavel Pogrebnyak (Zenit), Roman Pavlyuchenko (Spartak), Dmitri Sychev (Lokomotiv), Roman Adamov (FK Moscow), Ivan Saenko (Nuremberg)
Do not be surprised to see all squad made from players of Russian clubs, except one player. Nearly all of them could play in major european clubs, but the money Russian clubs are able to pay holds them in native country.
Zenit, which have won UEFA cup few weeks before, has 6 players in the squad. Rangers had no chanches - looked really miserable. Of course, it's two different thinks clubs football and national teams football, but 6 players means much. The doubt is about Pavel Pogrebnyak (Zenit) - one of the leaders of Zenit, who has got an injury, and who could be the key-player in national team as well with Arshavin.
Arshavin - with no doubt can be called a team's leader. Arshavin was wonderful with Zenit, but he is suspended for the first two games of Euro 2008. Even it's a big lose, but Russia is good enough to end in 2nd or even 1st place in this group.
Prediction: 2nd place (with the manager Guus Hidding, who led to the World Cup semi-finals Netherlands in 1998 and South Korea in 2002 and even Australia to the knockout round in 2006, this team is cappable to do more then only to be in Euro championship. Simply the mind the England was left behind Euro 2008 doors can lift this team really high.)
SPAIN SQUAD:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Andres Palop (Sevilla)
Defenders: Raul Albiol (Valencia), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Juanito Gutierrez (Real Betis), Fernando Navarro (Mallorca), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Alvaro Arbeloa (Liverpool)
Midfielders: Xavi Hernandez (FC Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), David Silva (Valencia), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), Ruben De La Red (Getafe), Marcos Senna (Villarreal), Santi Cazorla (Villarreal)
Forwards: Fernando Torres (Liverpool), David Villa (Valencia), Daniel Guiza (Mallorca), Sergio Garcia (Zaragoza).
Not much to say - although past times this team rarely showed good play in tournaments and usually is a big blow for fans, we predict this team to finish 1st in the group this time. Young generation has become realiable, experienced more than you can say looking at their age, players in big clubs.
The wins over Italy and France in preparation shows that the Spanish team is not ready to joke this time.
Spain - United States 1 - 0
Spain - Peru 2 - 1
Spain - Italy 1 - 0
Spain - France 1 - 0
Prediction: 1st place. (Not the strongest teams in the group to play with, but I think this Spanish squad is able to beat all 3 of them. Easy win over Sweden in qualification can add more confidence to the players - and as Sweden captain F. Ljunberg said "Spain is clear favourite", it shows that Spain is the team to be affraid of.)
